How a BMW engineer created the 3-Series Touring in his own garage
In the mid-80s a BMW engineer called Max Reisböck wanted to take his family on holiday. His family car, a 3-series E30, was too small for the family and all their luggage so he literally welded an extra section on the back of a wrecked 3-Series saloon and added a hatchback door to create an estate car.
Max's colleagues saw the car and persuaded him to take it to BMW management, who loved it so much they copied the design and in 1987, 3 years after Max showed them his own touring, the very first BMW 3-Series Touring appeared.
