Old car adverts - gallery

In the 2000s car makers have to adhere to strict guidelines when advertising their wares.  Back in the 70s and 80s the guidelines were rather more lax.  In the 50s and 60s they were almost non-existent.  Sexism was rife and outrageous claims commonplace.

Here's a gallery of some of our favourite, and not quite so favourite, car adverts.
Mini GTS - Spinning tyres are not allowed in modern adverts

Very sensible ad for the Audi 100

I think I prefer the Cavalier on the left

This wouldn't be allowed now.  Boasting about speed is banned.

Audi telling us about their new Quattro. And huge network of 8 dealers

A sportier Vauxhall Cavalier.  Is it possible?

Does Driving is Believing still hold true for the Rover SD1?

Casual sexism by Subaru

Outrageous sexism by Mercedes.  8 airbags indeed

More sexism from Citroen.  Is that apostrophe in the right place?

Toyota Celica Supra.  "Full instrumentation"

Rover 216.  56mpg!

Really?  Oh I see.  Daihatsu.  the kidnappers van

Frankly we expected better from Volkswagen
